A large commercial project

We’ve just begun work on a large commercial project that includes multiple beams and columns for a clerestory foyer in a large office building.

At first I was rather pensive about taking on such a large project as this isn’t the typical coffered ceiling type thing we’re used to. But when you break it all down it’s really not ‘rocket surgery’ either. Sure the layout took a little longer and there are hidden glitches that don’t often present themselves in a residential project, but when all is said and done, it’s still the type of work we like to do.

The project calls for a grid style coffered ceiling and columns that support it, as well as horizontal wall members and fabric wrapped acoustic panels.

The material is all sapele, both hardwood and veneers. The customer had an original concept drawing from the designer so estimating the job was relatively simple. The switch from Honduran mahogany (specified by the architect) to sapele was a simple sell that represented a significant materials savings to the customer, it may have helped us win the contract.

The beams are all edge-banded ¾” plywood, dadoed and glued together, no nails or staples. Wherever necessary we used 10’ lengths and butt jointed seams that will be hidden by other members.

Because they are being installed on a ceiling that’s 25 feet in the air, we had to figure a way to minimize cutting on site. We did this by including longer tails on the ceiling beams that touch the side walls, they’re easier to trim than the whole beam width, and the cut line will be hidden by the column below.
