With this method of installing base cabinets, you don’t have to level each individual cabinet or adjust them to get them level to each other.
First, build a plinth (toe kick base) 3” high for each run of cabinets. I usually make my plinth 3-4” smaller on all sides than the footprint of my run of cabinets. The plinth should just be the outline – no cross supports. Attach the plinth to the floor using pocket screws or angle brackets.
Next, build a “ladder-back” which will slip inside the plinth and has cross supports every 12-24”.
Drop the ladder-back into the plinth, lift one corner of the ladder-back 1” off the floor and drive a brad through the plinth into the ladder-back near the corner. Working from that corner, level the rest of the ladder-back using brads to hold it in place. Once the whole ladder-back is level, put several screws through the plinth into the ladder-back for support.
If installing multiple runs of base cabinets, repeat the steps above for each, leveling each subsequent ladder-back to the previous.
Once the plinths are all installed, just set the base cabinets in place and attach them to the plinth. No shimming or adjusting needed.
