Bio:
I'm Canadian by birth, though moved to the USA when I was about 15 years old.
Dad was an international banker, but he always had a small woodshop in the garage.
In the early years I spent more time locked out of the shop than in it because I'd left it a mess the day before. Perhaps that's part of the reason that I feel it's so important to keep the shop clean now.
After 4 years of college and a few years in NYC in a suit and tie I realized that my direction must change.
I took a substantial pay cut and spent six years working in a local high-end cabinet shop. I was very honest with my new employer and I explained that I was there to learn the trade. From the first day I treated my job as my next education, fully knowing I'd someday start my own business.
Dovetail Designs started in my two car garage where I would often dream of someday owning an edgebander.
Today I own that edgebander, as well as lots of other really cool tools, and the building that surrounds them.
I love everything about my job, from the freedom of self employment and the satisfaction of producing a tangible result to the more mundane tasks that include emptying the dust collector and paying the bills.
The work is often challenging, but always rewarding. I can't imagine doing anything else.
