BRENT SWIM
D.O.B: 22/12/65
Hometown: Princeton, WV
Brent is the primary truck driver for the No. 17 DEWALT Tools Ford. He logs anywhere from 50-60,000 miles each year behind the big yellow rig emblazoned with the DEWALT logo. He travels as far north as Loudon, New Hampshire, as far south as Miami, Florida and as far west as San Francisco, California.
Swim is a native of Princeton, West Virginia, but when he’s home, he currently lives in Mooresville, NC with wife Kim and their children Chase and Jenna.
Swim answered some questions for DEWALT.com back in 2001:
- Tell us about your family.
My wife, Kim, and I have two children. Chase is our 11-year old son who is
a big DEWALT Racing fan as his is 11-year old sister, Jenna.
- What are your shop and race-day
duties?
My primary responsibilities as the driver of the DEWALT transporter require
me to make sure we have everything we need to go to the race while I am in
the shop. At the track I am the team chef and during the race I catch the
used tires coming off the car during the pit stops.
- Tell us something interesting
about yourself outside of racing?
While I spend most of my time working, I love to bow hunt with Chase. Last
year he killed one of the largest boars in the state of West Virginia.
- What would you say is the toughest
aspect of your job and why?
Being gone so much away from family is probably the most difficult part of
our job here.
- How did you get hooked-up with
Matt, Robbie, and Roush Racing?
I was working for the 6 car and Jack Roush was opening a new Cup team. I talked
to
Robbie at that time and I have been with the team since DEWALT’S 5-race deal
in 1999.
- Why racing versus another career?
I always liked the sport and feel lucky to be part of this team – besides,
it’s a heckuva lot of fun.
- What element of the weekend is
your favorite and why?
I love and live for the race itself. It’s awesome to see such hard work paying
off on Sundays.
- If you had to identify the most
memorable part of your racing career, what would it be?
Without a doubt, it would have to be our first Cup win as a team at Lowe’s
Motorspeedway during the Coca-Cola 600 last year!
- On your limited time off, what
do you do away from the track?
I try to spend as much time as possible with my family here in Charlotte or
in West Virginia.
- What do you want to do after you're
finished with your racing career?
Catch up on everything I have missed with my family since I have been on the
road with
racing for such a long period of time.
- Aside from getting the car ready,
what do you do during the week in preparation for the upcoming race?
Stock the truck, make repairs and make sure we have enough of everything to
take to the track for that week’s race. We take two cars and a spare engine
along with all of our DEWALT tools and supplies for the entire weekend.
- Do you have any pre-race traditions/superstitions
that you go through prior to the green flag dropping?
No, sorry. I just go racing.
- What has been the most memorable
moment on Pit Road for you?
The fire in Rockingham last year. I don't think any of us will ever forget
that.
- "If I won the lottery, I
would..."
Buy a nice home, but keep working but stay home a little more than I do right
now.
- "I come to work everyday
because..."
I really like the people that I work with here at Roush Racing.
- Who is your favorite NFL, MLB or NHL player and why couldn't they do your job?
I don’t have time to keep up with anything but racing.
- What are your goals for 2001 and
2002?
To work towards a Winston Cup Championship. Our team focuses on that championship
on a regular basis.
