Loudon, N.H. (Sept. 20, 2009) - Matt Kenseth and the No. 17 Carhartt/DEWALT Racing Team struggled to a 23rd-place finish in Sunday's Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Kenseth and the team battled poor track position, an extremely loose race car and an overheating brake problem for the majority of the 300-lap race.
Kenseth and the team started the race 38th after struggling in Friday's qualifying session, but moved up to 24th just 10 laps into the race. However, the handling on the No. 17 Ford took a turn for the worse with Kenseth falling back to 27th just six laps later. The team would continue to struggle with the car making various adjustments under yellow flag pit stops on laps 68 and 86.
The adjustments failed to fix the car's issues and running 30th, Kenseth gambled and stayed out after the race's fourth caution on lap 160. He restarted in fifth – his highest position of the day – and held the car inside the top 10 until caution was called for the fifth time on lap 168.
Kenseth then radioed that he was experiencing issues with the car's braking and having to pump the car's brakes in the corners. The team was forced to come down pit road for a series of stops to check out and ultimately bleed the car's brakes.
Kenseth restarted in 26th position and continued to battle an extremely loose car for the remainder of the race, as crew chief Drew Blickensderfer and the team continued to work with the car during pit stops under caution. In the end they would settle for the 23rd-place finish.
The team returns to action next weekend at Kenseth's favorite track on the circuit, Dover International Speedway, where the driver boasts one win, eight top-fives and 13 top-10 finishes in 21 starts. The team finished fourth there in the spring.
