BALTIMORE, Sept. 2003 - DEWALT has introduced a new two-speed benchtop thickness planer with fan-assisted chip ejection, automatic carriage lock, and a unique three-knife cutter head that produces an extra smooth finish with virtually no snipe.
Designed for skilled woodworkers, millwork specialists, professional cabinet shops and furniture makers, the DEWALT DW735 is a 13-inch planer that combines a two-speed gearbox with a three-knife cutter head to remove material at 96 or 179 cuts-per-inch, nearly double the rate of current units on the market.
The two-speed setting features a "dimensioning" speed for faster material removal, and a "finishing" speed for a slower final pass to avoid tear-out, even on tough-to-plane figured woods.
To minimize the board movement that causes snipe, the DW735 has a built-in carriage lock that engages automatically when the wood is in place, so there's no lever to raise and lower before each pass. In addition, the DW735 has a solid 19 ¾-inch cast aluminum base that provides twice the rigidity of traditional folding tables for maximum material support.
Inside the planer, a patented "fan-assisted chip ejection" system clears wood chips away from the cutter head and exhausts them out the machine. This prevents debris from clogging the planer and allows for a divot-free finish with less wear on the motor and knives. The tool comes with an ejection port that can be attached to a 4-inch hose for dust collection. DEWALT also offers a separate accessory (DW7353) that channels debris directly into a garbage can or drum.
Cutting accuracy is indicated by three calibrated measurement scales. The easy-to-read turret depth stop, material removal scale, and material thickness scale are all located on the front of the planer. In addition, the DW735 has a self-seating knife system that ensures consistent parallelism of all three cutting edges.
The carriage rides on four robust threaded posts. An oversized crank handle allows for precise depth adjustments, while the large paddle switch makes the unit easy to turn on and off.
For longevity, the disposable, reversible knives are made from M2 laminated steel. They provide 30% longer life than the previous two-knife system and are easy to change using just one tool.
The DW735 comes with three reversible knives, two standard dust collection attachments, and a one-year warranty. In addition, separate accessories include a mobile planer stand, folding tables, extra knives, and a chip collection attachment.
