Here's why: The 744's unique rip fence can clamp to a pair of rails that crank out from the table, allowing for rips of 24 1/2" when fully extended. Yet it retracts fully within the saw when not in use. And the dial-operated rack-and-pinion gear system automatically keeps the fence parallel to the blade as you adjust the width of the rip.
