Q: What can I do if I make a dado cut and find that it just a hair too tight and the corresponding piece will not fit inside?
A: If you find that you have cut a dado or groove that is just a shade too tight to accept the corresponding board, the solution is simple. Take a scrap block of the same stock that is to be inserted and wrap a piece of 100-grit sandpaper around it. You might need to sand or hand plane a little thickness off of the block first. Then just push it back and forth through the dado a few times to widen it slightly so that your board will fit snugly. Next time, avoid this problem by making test cuts with your dado head first, shimming it until it makes a perfect fit before making your final cuts.
