Q: Can you please explain just how getting a nice even bevel on a door is accomplished with a hand held planer? I've taken a look at your planer and the sole plate doesn't tilt so what's the secret?
A: There is actually a much lower-tech solution that will work with all DEWALT hand held planers. I attach the following message from Leland Stone who is a featured editor in DEWALT's "Pro's Column".
"I have a marking gauge in my door hanging kit, which I
use to scribe a line on the 'low edge' of the bevel. Then I plane to this line, tilting the planer and trimming the corner off one edge of the door (the 'high edge' of the bevel -- the other corner -- isn't trimmed). Next,
using the original edge and scribed line as references, I tilt the planer while removing the remaining waste material. With practice, the result is a neat, consistent bevel. For interior doors (1-3/8" thick), a 1/16" bevel is
sufficient, but on exterior doors (1-3/4" thick), I'll cut 1/8"."
